The Lifted Lady

Posted by Keisha Mitchell On Sept - 14 - 2009

It is amazing to me how several of the most coveted positions (in the church and in the secular world) appear, from the outside view, to carry great grandeur and few tribulations. However, this is a great misconception. Many desire to carry the titles of honor, but they truly do not understand the reality of the burden that comes with these positions.

Removing The Clutter

Do you have a closet that no one is allowed to open? I wonder why not. Is it full of junk and you keep telling yourself you are going to use one day? Just like cleaning out the closet, at times we need to do a spiritual and emotional cleaning.

Don't Stop The Love

Posted by Tanya White On Sept - 14 - 2009

Have you noticed that now that Valentine’s Day is history you have made being in and demonstrating love a mystery? Your unexpected kisses have been kicked to the curve. The peace has passed away. Your loving words of encouragement and compassion have quickly crept away like a thief in the night.

God Has The Final Say

Posted by Tonya Blount June - 1 - 2009

After years of emotional, physical, and verbal abuse, I finally ended my marriage. My exodus wasn’t planned. After a vicious beating that led to my arrest (at my former husband insistence), I prayed to God and heard an audible voice that asked, “Are you ready to Leave the Wilderness?” Several days later, I packed up my children and left. I had no plan and nowhere to go. We were immediately homeless...

Managing The Stress In Our Temples

Posted by Patricia Bridewell On Sept - 14 - 2009

Have you ever had those days when you just wanted to throw your hands in the air and give up? I know the feeling because I have rough days, too. The burden of stress falls on all of us and although it can be challenging, it is something we must all face. I would like to share some faith-based information and stress management techniques that I hope will help you cope with the stress in your lives.

We're a few days away from the deadline of our early tickets purchase for "A Night to Remember with Tonya Blount." If you haven't purchased your tickets yet and plan on attending, this is a gentle reminder.

A Night To Remember with Tonya Blount is a fundraiser event for her organization, Leave the Wilderness, Inc., so your ticket purchase is tax-deductible. All proceeds for this event will go toward Bertha Mae's Place, a Brooklyn, New York based home for battered women and children. The home is named after Tonya's late mother.

The black-tie gala will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 7:00pm - Midnight. We have special performances by Melba Moore, Karen Bernod, and yours truly will perform with the harp. We have special guest speakers: Dominic Carter, NY1 news reporter and host, NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg's Official, Sally MacNichol, Director of Programs at Connect NYC, Dr. Alfred Phillips, and many more.

If you are unable to attend, please consider sponsoring one of the survivors that will be attending, or you can donate $20.00 and be listed as a Friend of Leave the Wilderness, Inc., in the program journal. For $100 your company, name can be displayed as the table sponsor. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.

During the event, we will be remembering those women that have lost their lives because of domestic violence by honoring them in "Remember Me," a video tribute that will be shown.

Please visit http://www.anighttoremembertb.com/ for more details, location of the event and to purchase tickets. The event is 10 minutes from LaGuardia Airport. Crowne Plaza and Comfort Inn are also ten minutes away.

Tonya Blount is the Founder/Executive Director, Leave the Wilderness, Inc. and also the new Editor-In-Chief of Having Church For Women Magazine. Tonya will be our featured columnist dealing with the issue of domestic violence and provding solutions for women who have experienced this pain.
